Making the Planning System Work: Flashpoint Checklist

Here is a checklist of potential flashpoints that were considered:

System Level:

  • Is the system easy to use?
  • Are the tools & formats easy to use?

Role Clarity – DU/CU Planning:

  • Are people clear about what deliverables are expected from them? Daily, weekly, monthly, event-wise, etc.
  • Are people clear about what deliverables are expected of them in P1, P2, P3 and P4?
  • Are people clear about the contributions expected from them?
    • Providing visibility of current status to the team members.
    • Identifying causes for variance so they can be addressed and self-balancing can take place at the earliest.
    • Ensuring data is updated.
    • Ensuring data is aligned with ground reality (cross-checking).

Role Clarity – Central Planning:

  • Are people clear about what deliverables are expected of them in P1, P2, P3 and P4?
  • Are people clear about the contributions expected from them?
    • Ensuring baseline is complete and updated
    • Creating E&P Roadmap
    • Ensuring all data is updated so current reality is visible to senior management & all relevant stakeholders
    • Providing relevant reports & analysis to ensure early action
    • Balancing project needs & resources (synthesis role)

Capabilities

  • Do people have the necessary cognitive and engagement skills for meaningful & proactive analysis and supporting development of solutions & decisions by team members?

Ensuring practices are followed

  • Regular updation of data.
  • Validation with ground reality.
  • Integrity of flow of data & information – i.e. going via central planning, no cross connection between DU planning and CU planning directly.
  • Engagement and think-through of information & variance is done to ensure meaningful and proactive analysis (rather than focus on blindly meeting deliverable goals).

Clarity of Purpose

  • Do people understand the value and criticality of commitment-based interactions? We will cover these points as part of the E&P Contributor Basics Program.
