Role of an Engineering Manager

Core Outcomes

  1. Master Plan: Evaluation of all options & short listing, concept notes, tech evaluation, benchmarking, etc.
  2. Layout Management: control & fixing of Take Over Points; final approval
  3. Engineering Execution Plan: CU propose packaging philosophy; PM + Engineering Manager finalise
  4. Resource Assessment: Ensuring timely release of payments as per payment terms
  5. Progress Management: with inputs from Planning
  6. Flash Points Management: inter-function issues and flash points.
  7. Change Management: Monitoring changes and deviations with feedback to sub DU / CU
  8. Statutory Discipline: w.r.t. layout and engineering related issues
  9. Productivity: Monitoring earned man-months and savings

Key Practices

  1. Monitoring competency levels – higher DU level monitoring the lower DU level
  2. Regular follow ups with CU / sub-DU / other G6
  3. Well in Time practices

Should Do

  1. Interact with all CU and coordinate for integration of all process units
  2. Compile and finalise the layout after evaluation is done by respective CU
  3. Collect Master Documents from CU and allocate resources based on scope of the work for each CU
  4. Resolve competency issues with CU
  5. Review project milestone with Planning and finalise after consultation with CU
  6. Review the project progress on a regular basis (once a month for top level DU)
  7. Have regular inter-DU review sessions
  8. Encourage CU to resolve their issues at their end itself
  9. Own the ECR sent by CU (changes) and ensure project is not affected
  10. Collect learnings from all CU and build knowledge / documentation for future projects

Should not do

  1. Impose construction methodologies in engineering
  2. Interact outside of E&P
  3. Avoid shortcuts
  4. Make assumptions – always check data first
  5. Get involved in commercial aspects
  6. Play other roles unless otherwise instructed by the organisation

G6 Interface

  1. Status updates to G6 on issues / concerns on real time basis
  2. Sharing of analysis on variance, pain points, discussion issues w.r.t. commitments

CU Interface

  1. Through sub-DU EMs, input requirements for various CU to meet targets
  2. Interact on 6KPIs observations from time to time
  3. Troubleshoot issues escalated by sub DU EM / Project DU EM
  4. Escalate to CU leads on support requirement w.r.t. competency or number of resources or any other technical resolutions
